October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month and I'd like to honor the experiences and challenges of chronic workers everywhere. Disabled and ill workers are an untapped source of talent in the U.S. and often underemployed.
Unemployment rates remain twice as high for workers with a disability compared with workers without a disability - Center for American Progress
Let's change that!
Here is a list of job boards, career events, and other job resources curated with disabled and chronically ill workers in mind.
Disabled-driven job boards
These are some job boards I've some across that specifically support workers with disabilities (in no particular order):
Inclusively
Started as a job board for people with disabilities, Inclusively is a platform that helps companies create a diverse and inclusive workforce and personalize the job experience for workers. They help you to create a personalized profile that includes accommodations you need to work well.
Chronically Capable
A flexible job board for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Chronically Capable gathers flexible and remote job opportunities from employers looking to hire more people with illnesses and disabilities and matches them with potential candidates.
Like Inclusively, you can create a profile with job preferences and accommodation needs to better match you to jobs.
Disability Solutions
A job board with thousands of on-site and work-from-home opportunities for chronic workers. You can also sign up to receive job alerts, post your resume, and take advantage of resources including interview training and resume editing tools.
abilityJOBS
Focused on connecting businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits with disabled workers, abilityJOBS features a job board with thousands of listings. Create a job seeker account, share a searchable resume, or attend one of their virtual job fairs.
Disabled Person
A non-profit project, the Disabled Person job board has thousands of opportunities direct from employers. It also includes a resume builder, job salary search tool, a virtual learning platform, work accessibility blog, and a variety of other resources.
Additional job resources
They may not be geared towards people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, but these job boards deserve an honorable mention.
- People-First Jobs: Collection of jobs from companies committed to employee well-being and work-life balance.
- FlexJobs: The largest job board for remote an flexible jobs worldwide.
- B Work: A job board featuring listings from certified social enterprises held to high standards in multiple areas of business (B Corporations).
- Career Circle: Focused on diverse and inclusive hiring, this job board also offers free job resources, tools, resume reviews, and training.
Looking for additional support or career help outside of job boards?
PowerToFly is a diversity recruiting and retention platform that offers a series of annual summits on different diversity topics, including race, disability and, neurodivergence. Each summit includes and all-day virtual job fair with presentations from prospective employers.
A new world of employment for chronic workers
It's exciting to see what options and opportunities there are available out there. Finding resources created for people like me is incredible, and I look forward to making use of all of these this year.
But the list is still a short one and I hope to add to it as I go. Look out for additions to this list of resources in the next few months!
